itinerary Overview

The Lemosho Route is a premium trekking experience on Mount Kilimanjaro, ideal for 6, 7, or 8-day itineraries depending on your pace and acclimatization needs. Beginning on wide heath-covered trails, the route winds through alpine meadows and into the arctic zone near Uhuru Peak, offering a breathtaking journey through Kilimanjaro’s diverse climate zones. The descent follows a different path through lush rainforest, completing what many consider the most scenic route on the mountain. With acclimatization built into its design, Lemosho boasts the highest summit success rates—up to 95% on the 8-day option. Covering a total distance of 46 kilometers (28.5 miles), the route is well-paced to allow your body to adjust naturally to altitude. A high-altitude drop-off by vehicle at the trailhead is recommended for an easier start. Though it's a bit more of an investment, the panoramic views, peaceful trails, and summit success make it well worth the cost. This route is perfect for those seeking both beauty and a strong chance to reach the top of Africa.

Whatever your arrival time at Kilimanjaro International Airport will be, your TmT driver-guide will be waiting for you with a warm welcoming smile. Kick back and relax in your comfortable vehicle as he takes you to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi, Tanzania’s self-styled safari capital. On the way to the hotel, you will get a brief impression of this large, bustling, Safari Hub. Depending on your arrival time, you may have your pre-safari briefing today; if not, it will take place early tomorrow morning.

Your journey begins with a morning briefing at the hotel, followed by a scenic 3–4 hour drive to Londorossi Gate (2,200m) for park registration and permits. From there, an off-road vehicle takes you to the Shira Plateau (3,500m), offering your first stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s highlands. A short, gentle hike leads to Shira 1 Camp, allowing your body to begin acclimatizing gradually at high altitude. Upon arrival, your mountain crew will have your tents ready and a hot dinner prepared, and you’ll receive key health tips to help prevent altitude sickness as your Kilimanjaro adventure begins.

Change in Elevation: Lemosho Glades (3,500 m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m)

  • Hiking distance: 5 km
  • Hiking time: 1 to 2 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Change in Elevation:  Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m) to Destination point en route to Lava Tower (4,110 m)

  • Hiking distance: 2 km
  • Hiking time: 1 to 2 hours
  • Habitat: Moorlands

After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a gentle trek across the Shira Plateau from Shira 1 Camp (3,505m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m), surrounded by panoramic views and the rare alpine flora of Kilimanjaro. This stretch is not physically demanding, giving you time to soak in the scenery—including a possible view of Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth-highest peak, if weather allows. Upon arrival at camp, lunch will be served, followed by a rest period. Later, your guide will lead a short acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower, gaining an additional 200 meters to support your adjustment to the altitude.

Note: The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.

Change in Elevation: Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m)

  • Hiking distance: 7 km
  • Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Habitat: Moorlands

Today's trek leads you from Shira 2 Camp (3,900m) to the towering Lava Tower (4,630m), an important acclimatization stop where you’ll have lunch and spend 1–2 hours adjusting to the higher altitude. Though the trail includes several ascents and descents, it offers a vital step in preparing your body for summit day. Afterward, you’ll descend to the scenic Barranco Camp (3,960m), nestled below towering cliffs and home to the dramatic Barranco Wall. Don’t worry—despite its size, tomorrow’s climb up the wall follows a safe and straightforward trail that adds excitement to your adventure.

Note: If one or more participants feel sick, the group may refrain from passing the Lava Tower and adjust the route, following instead the road for porters. In this case, you will not reach an altitude of 4,630 meters, getting up only to a maximum of 4,400 meters

Then you will return to Barafu Camp and after a 2-hour rest continue your descent to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).
