itinerary Overview

Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route” for its adventurous nature, the Machame Route is one of the most popular and visually stunning trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. Perfect for experienced hikers, this route offers a more challenging trek, recommended for those who are physically fit and already acclimatized to higher altitudes.
Your journey begins at 1,850 meters in the heart of Kilimanjaro’s lush rain-forest, gradually ascending through five distinct climate zones—from moorlands to alpine desert and glacier—providing ideal conditions for natural acclimatization. With its smooth elevation gain and daily-changing landscapes, the Machame Route offers a truly immersive experience in nature.
However, expect some steep, demanding sections, especially as you climb higher. During the rainy seasons (November, April, and May), parts of the trail may become muddy and eroded, adding to the challenge. Despite this, the route boasts a high summit success rate, making it a favorite for those seeking both beauty and accomplishment on Africa’s tallest peak.
Whether you're chasing panoramic views or testing your limits, the Machame Route promises an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.

Whatever your arrival time at Kilimanjaro International Airport will be, your TmT driver-guide will be waiting for you with a warm welcoming smile. Kick back and relax in your comfortable vehicle as he takes you to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi, Tanzania’s self-styled safari capital. On the way to the hotel, you will get a brief impression of this large, bustling, Safari Hub. Depending on your arrival time, you may have your pre-safari briefing today; if not, it will take place early tomorrow morning

Your adventure begins with a morning briefing at the hotel before heading to Machame Gate (1,800m), the official entry to Kilimanjaro National Park, where permits are issued and your trek begins. The day’s hike takes you through the lush rainforest zone, known for its dense vegetation and frequent tropical showers—so waterproof gear is a must. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Machame Camp (3,010m), your first overnight stop at high altitude, where it's essential to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and consider taking Diamox to ease acclimatization. As your body adjusts to the elevation, it’s normal to feel some effects of the altitude, so be sure to communicate any symptoms to your guide right away.

Change in Elevation: Machame Gate (1,800 m) – Machame Camp (3,010 m)

  • Hiking distance: 5 km
  • Hiking time: 6 to 7 hours

Trekking from Machame Camp to Shira Camp: -

Change in Elevation: Machame Camp (3,010 m) to Shira Camp (3,845 m)

  • Hiking distance: 5 km
  • Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, the trek continues upward as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, gradually revealing the wide, open views of the stunning Shira Plateau. Although the trail to Shira Camp (3,845m) isn’t too physically demanding, the increasing altitude can be felt, so pacing yourself and listening to your body is crucial. After settling in at camp, you’ll enjoy lunch and take a short acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower, gaining an additional 300 meters before returning to camp. A warm dinner awaits at Shira Camp as you rest and continue adjusting to the higher elevation.

Note: The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.

Today’s trek leads you from Shira Camp (3,845m) to the dramatic Lava Tower (4,630m), a key acclimatization points where you’ll stop for lunch and spend time adjusting to the higher altitude. This section includes several ascents and descents and may feel physically demanding, but it's essential for preparing your body for the summit. After resting at Lava Tower, you’ll descend to the scenic Barranco Camp (3,960m), where you’ll get your first glimpse of the iconic Barranco Wall. If anyone in the group experiences altitude symptoms, the route may be adjusted to a slightly lower path, topping out at around 4,400m for safety.

After celebrating your summit and optionally visiting a nearby glacier, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. The day ends with a continued descent to Millennium Camp (3,820m), where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved dinner and a full night of sleep.

Note: Do not forget that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including all broken arms and legs. Please pay attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.

At the gate, you'll have the chance to leave your thoughts in the guestbook before receiving your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates at our office.
